Coastal Karnataka is one of India's great pilgrimage regions, and four of its best-known temples are within reach of Honnavar: the Mahaganapati Temple at Idagunji, the Shiva temples of Murudeshwar and Gokarna, and the Mookambika Temple at Kollur. Many families visit them together, and Hotel Pumerai on NH-66 makes a comfortable base with a pure vegetarian restaurant, Madhura, on site.
Darshan timings change on festival days and between seasons, so we have not printed them here; check locally or ask our front desk the evening before.
Day 1: Idagunji and Murudeshwar
Idagunji's Mahaganapati Temple is 19 km from the hotel, about 25 minutes. Ganesha is worshipped here standing, and many pilgrims begin a coastal circuit with him. Go early, when the queue is short.
Continue to Murudeshwar, 26 km from Honnavar, for the Shiva temple at the foot of the 123-foot statue on Kanduka Hill. Legend links it to Gokarna: Ravana is said to have thrown here the cloth that covered the Atmalinga. Return to the hotel for lunch at Madhura and a quiet afternoon.
Day 2: Gokarna
Gokarna is 48 km north, about 55 minutes. Visit the Maha Ganapati Temple first and then the Mahabaleshwar Temple, believed to hold the Atmalinga that Ravana carried from Kailasa. Pilgrims bathe at the Koti Tirtha tank before darshan, and some take a dip in the sea at Gokarna's main beach.
Day 3: Kollur Mookambika
Kollur, in Udupi district, is the longest drive of the circuit: south on NH-66 and then inland to the foot of the Kodachadri hills. The Mookambika Temple is one of the most important Devi temples of South India and is busy all year. Leave early, and plan the whole day for it.
If you have a fourth day, continue to Udupi's Sri Krishna Matha, 130 km from Hotel Pumerai, about 2 hours 15 minutes.
Where to stay and eat on the circuit
Staying in one place saves a lot of packing for families with elders. Hotel Pumerai in Honnavar is between the northern and southern temples on NH-66, with lifts to every floor, free covered parking for a family car or a hired vehicle, and a Family Suite Room that sleeps four.
Madhura, the hotel's pure vegetarian restaurant, opens at 6:30 AM, so you can eat before an early darshan, and serves a Karavali veg thali at lunch and dinner. Breakfast is included with direct bookings.
Getting around
A car with a driver is the simplest way to do the circuit, because Idagunji and Kollur are off the highway. KSRTC buses run along NH-66 between Honnavar, Murudeshwar and Kumta if you prefer public transport, and the Konkan Railway stops at Honnavar, Murudeshwar and Gokarna Road. Ask the front desk to arrange a taxi for the day.
Tips for pilgrims
- Dress: many temples on this coast ask men to remove shirts and vests before the inner sanctum; carry a dhoti or modest clothing and check the rules at the entrance.
- Timing: early mornings have the shortest queues and the coolest weather.
- Food: Madhura at Hotel Pumerai is pure vegetarian, serves tiffins from 6:30 AM and meals until 10:00 PM.
- Festivals: Mahashivaratri (Gokarna, Murudeshwar) and Navaratri (Kollur) bring very large crowds; book rooms early.
