Murudeshwar is the temple town most travellers on the Karnataka coast come to see: a 123-foot Shiva statue on a headland, a temple gateway tower with a lift to the top, and a beach right below the temple. It is an easy drive from Hotel Pumerai: 26 km south along NH-66, about 35 minutes in normal traffic. That makes Honnavar a calm base for a Murudeshwar visit, with somewhere quieter to come back to in the evening.

Staying in Honnavar also puts the rest of the coast within reach. Gokarna is 48 km to the north, Kasarkod Eco Beach is 5 km from the hotel, and the Sharavathi backwaters are on its doorstep, so a Murudeshwar day fits into a longer trip rather than being the whole of it.

How to get there

By car

Drive 26 km south on NH-66, about 35 minutes, and follow the signs for Murudeshwar temple at the junction. Free covered parking at the hotel means you can leave early and come back late.

By KSRTC bus

Buses running south on NH-66 towards Bhatkal, Kundapura and Udupi pass Murudeshwar. Catch one at Honnavar bus stand and check with the conductor that it stops at Murudeshwar.

By train

Murudeshwar has its own station on the Konkan Railway, the same line as Honnavar station (3.5 km from the hotel). For a day trip the road is usually quicker and more flexible.

Best time to visit

October to March brings dry weather and calm seas, the best months for the beach and for boat trips to Netrani Island. Mahashivaratri, in February or March, draws large crowds to the temple. The monsoon (June to September) is dramatic but rough at sea, and Netrani trips usually stop.

Top things to see

The Shiva statue

The seated statue of Shiva on Kanduka Hill is 123 feet tall and faces the Arabian Sea; you can see it from far down the coast. Come early in the morning or at sunset, when the light is softer and the hill is cooler. Sculptures around the hill tell the legend of Ravana and the Atmalinga.

Raja Gopura

The temple's gateway tower is one of the tallest gopuras in India, and a lift takes visitors up to viewing windows near the top. From there you look down on the statue, the fishing harbour and the sea on three sides of the headland.

Murudeshwar Temple

The Shiva temple sits at the foot of the statue on the same headland. Its legend links it to Gokarna: Ravana is said to have flung the cloth covering the Atmalinga here, which is why pilgrims often visit both towns on one trip.

Murudeshwar Beach

A long sandy beach runs up to the temple, with fishing boats pulled up at one end and food stalls near the steps. It is busiest in the evening. Check local warnings before swimming, because the sea can be rough.

Netrani Island

Netrani is a small rocky island off Murudeshwar, known for coral, reef fish and some of the best scuba diving and snorkelling on India's west coast. Dive operators in Murudeshwar run boat trips in the dry season; book ahead and expect a very early start from Honnavar.

Idagunji Mahaganapati Temple

Idagunji's Ganesha temple is 19 km from the hotel, about 25 minutes by car, and many pilgrims visit it on the same day as Murudeshwar. Go in the morning, when queues are shorter.
