Uttara Kannada, North Canara in older maps, is the long district on Karnataka's northern coast between Goa and Udupi. It packs a remarkable amount into a narrow strip: a coastline of river mouths, fishing harbours and quiet beaches; temple towns such as Gokarna and Murudeshwar; and, a short drive inland, the forests, waterfalls and spice gardens of the Western Ghats around Sirsi, Yana and Jog Falls.
Honnavar sits near the middle of that coast, where the Sharavathi river meets the Arabian Sea. From Hotel Pumerai on NH-66, Gokarna is 48 km to the north, Murudeshwar 26 km to the south and Sirsi 68 km inland, so you can see most of the district on day trips from one base, without packing up every morning.
NH-66 runs the length of the coast from Goa to Udupi and Mangaluru, and NH-69 climbs inland from Honnavar towards Jog Falls. Goa's southern coast is about 125 km from the hotel, Udupi 130 km and Mangaluru 185 km.
The Konkan Railway follows the coast, with stations at Karwar, Ankola, Gokarna Road, Kumta, Honnavar, Murudeshwar and Bhatkal. Honnavar station is 3.5 km from the hotel.
Fly into Goa (Dabolim, about 160 km, or Mopa, about 190 km) or Mangaluru (about 185 km) and drive along NH-66.
October to March is the classic season: dry, sunny and good for beaches, temples and treks. The monsoon (June to September) is the time for waterfalls, especially Jog Falls, and for the deep green of the Ghats, but the sea is rough and some beach cafés close. April and May are hot and humid on the coast.
Temple town and beaches, 48 km north: the Mahabaleshwar Temple, Om Beach and Kudle Beach.
The 123-foot Shiva statue, the Raja Gopura and Netrani Island's reefs, 26 km south.
The busy taluk town next door, with Mirjan Fort and the Aghanashini estuary.
The old port at the district's southern edge: stone basadi, carved temples and Bhatkali biryani.
The Sharavathi river's great waterfall, inland on NH-69, at its best in and after the monsoon.
The Western Ghats day: Yana's rock pinnacles, Sirsi's Marikamba Temple and Sahasralinga, 68 km away.
On the hotel's doorstep: the Sharavathi backwaters (2.8 km), Kasarkod Eco Beach (5 km), Apsarakonda falls (7 km) and Idagunji temple (19 km).
For a trip that covers both Gokarna and Murudeshwar, stay in the middle of the coast. Hotel Pumerai in Honnavar is 48 km from Gokarna, 26 km from Murudeshwar and 68 km from Sirsi, all on day-trip distances.
Three days covers the highlights: one for Gokarna, one for Murudeshwar and the beaches near Honnavar, and one inland for Jog Falls or Sirsi and Yana. Add more days for diving at Netrani or a slower beach holiday.
October to March for beaches and sightseeing; June to September for waterfalls such as Jog Falls, when the sea is rough and paths are wet.
