The Uttara Kannada coast is short enough to see properly in three days, and Honnavar is in the middle of it. Stay three nights at Hotel Pumerai on NH-66 and you can spend a day at each end of the coast, Gokarna 48 km to the north and Murudeshwar 26 km to the south, with a slower day in between on Honnavar's river and beaches.
This plan assumes you have a car or a taxi for the day. Every drive is under an hour, so there is time for long lunches, a swim in the hotel's rooftop pool (open until 7:00 PM) and dinner at Matsya or Madhura each night.
Day 1: Gokarna, temples and beaches
Leave Honnavar early; Madhura opens at 6:30 AM for a dosa and filter kaapi. Gokarna is 48 km north on NH-66, about 55 minutes. Start at the Maha Ganapati Temple and then the Mahabaleshwar Temple, believed to hold Shiva's Atmalinga, and walk past the Koti Tirtha tank while the town is still quiet.
By late morning, head south of town to the beaches. Om Beach, named for its shape, can be reached by road; if the trail is dry and you have good shoes, walk on to Half Moon Beach. Have lunch at a beach café, then spend the afternoon at Kudle Beach, which faces west for sunset. Drive back to Honnavar for dinner; Matsya's Honnavar Karavali fish curry is a good end to the day.
Day 2: Honnavar, the river and Kasarkod
Today stays close. The Sharavathi river meets the sea at Honnavar, and the boating point for its backwaters is 2.8 km from the hotel. A morning boat through the mangroves and small islands is the calmest way to see it; ask at the front desk about boat options before you go.
After lunch, drive 7 km to Apsarakonda, a small waterfall and cave above the sea with a sunset point nearby. Then spend the late afternoon at Kasarkod Eco Beach, 5 km from the hotel, one of India's Blue Flag certified beaches, with a boardwalk and casuarina trees. If you prefer history, swap Apsarakonda for Mirjan Fort, the 16th-century laterite fort 18 km from the hotel.
Day 3: Idagunji and Murudeshwar
Check out after breakfast (check-out is until 11:00 AM, or leave your bags at the desk) and drive south. Idagunji's Mahaganapati Temple is 19 km from the hotel, about 25 minutes, and is best visited early. Continue to Murudeshwar, 26 km from Honnavar on NH-66.
At Murudeshwar, see the Shiva temple, ride the lift up the Raja Gopura for the view over the 123-foot Shiva statue and the sea, and walk the hill and the beach below. From here you can continue south towards Bhatkal and Udupi, or return to Honnavar for another night.
Practical tips
- Best months: October to March, when the sea is calm and the beach trails are dry.
- Temples: carry clothing that covers shoulders and knees, and expect queues on festival days; check timings locally.
- Driving: all three days are short drives on NH-66; travel in daylight during the monsoon.
- Food: breakfast is included with direct bookings at Hotel Pumerai; Madhura is pure vegetarian, Matsya serves seafood.
Adding a fourth day
With one more day, go inland. Jog Falls is up the Sharavathi valley on NH-69, at its best from July to October, and the Yana rocks and Sirsi's Marikamba Temple make a second Western Ghats option. Both are covered in our Jog Falls and Sirsi and Yana pages.
